In memoriam — L.A. musician and friend Ray Burkhart

Heavenly music: Coventry Carol, sung by VOCES8

Ray Burkhart, a friend and client of our design studio, passed away in December 2020 at the age of 59. Ray was a talented trumpeter, composer, musicologist and conductor in the L.A. classical music scene for more than 30 years.

When Dad Vic and I visited London and Westminster Abbey a few years ago, Ray added bling-y crowns to “plain” photos we had posted on Facebook (below). Witty, droll and intellectual, Ray was zany-brainy. He knew more about brass chamber music than anyone we had ever met.

We met Ray in December 2010 when he played trumpet for Mom Barbara’s memorial service at our parish, First United Methodist Church in Glendale, California. Ray and organist Dr. Ladd Thomas performed Mom’s favorite English baroque trumpet music at our request — spectacularly. The service was a true celebration of Mom's life — uplifting and joyous, long remembered by family and friends.

I designed Ray's music staff logo/corporate identity and other projects, and Vic took fantastic, creative photos. And Ray dedicated one of his compositions to me ("Isle of Colours," a musical journey of British artists JMW Turner, John Constable and David Hockney). Sheet music is available via Premiere Press.

We will miss you, Ray. The trumpet shall sound.
